Look at the Unitary Development Plan - or Local Plan - proposals
map for your local area.  This details how each area of land in your
borough is zoned. Focus your search on urban areas - not greenbelt. 
Identify small areas of undeveloped land, such as gardens large
enough to accommodate another house.

Just think, you'll have driven past many suitable sites countless
times without ever giving them a second thought...

***Step 2***

Once you've identified a potential site, check it against Google Earth
and/or Bing Maps to give you a clearer picture. This will help you to
confirm the current or recent use of the land and judge what sort
of development the land may accommodate...

***Step 3***

If your potential plot seems to have potential, print off a Google
Earth image and file it ready for a site visit...

***Step 4***

Repeat the process many times!!! Then visit each site in person...
